ASUS VivoBook S15 (S530) Review : A Touch of Modernity on the Classic Laptop

Why should a lightweight laptop just be expensive? Asus is branding their new VivoBook series with this motto. The new laptops in the Asus VivoBook series (such as the ASUS VivoBook S15 S530) look exactly like a premium grade laptop. But in terms of price, they are within the reach of middle class, college or university educated youth. This is why VivoBooks are very popular at a budget of less than $700. In this article I tried to give a review about the laptop of the ASUS VivoBook S15 (S530) model.

At this time Asus VivoBook series laptops are the most affordable and quite popular laptops. VivoBook S14 (14 inch) and S15 (15 inch) models have been used all the latest generation components and the latest Asus design. Basically excluding the display and body size, the S14 and S15 are almost the same in all other respects. In this article we have appeared with a complete review of the latest edition S530 of Asus latest VivoBook S15 model. The model is available in a few variants depending on the hardware. As the review of Asus VivoBook S15 configuration is as follows: Core i5 8265U, 8GB RAM and 256 GB Flash Memory Solid State.

Design and Build Quality

Good to say, the Asus VivoBook S15 (S530) laptop is not the same as every other 15.6 inch laptop. The 15.6 inch display laptop is now known as the big one. But after taking this laptop, the over-all body felt very small to me. The reason for this is mainly due to their narrow bezel’s Nano Edge display technology. As a result of the use of Asus’ new design technology, the laptop’s screen-to-body ratio stands at 86%. That’s a really nice thing. Because that’s what we usually see on a premium laptop worth a thousand dollars.

The laptop is quite slim and weighs just 3.5 pounds. Due to the use of Asus’ signature ergolift technology with a narrow bezel, the upper part is relatively high when the lead is open. As a result, the air vent also increases the air circulation, and also allows good for typing. Brushed finishing metal sheets are used on the laptop’s lid. But the rest of it is made entirely of polycarbonate.

The most interesting aspect of the laptop is the use of different bright colors. However, its colorful accents are used only on the keyboard and trackpad on the inside of the laptop and on the side port side. According to the laptop’s color, its keyboard will also be available in two white and black variants. Its lid allows you to take a maximum of 140 degrees. This is enough to put it on the desk naturally.

Keyboard and Trackpad

Laptop keyboards are not used randomly by many. But even then, for those who write regularly, it is important to have a good keyboard. In fact, the Asus VivoBook S15 (S530) laptop’s impressions from the keyboard are negative. Because you won’t find it very easy to type with its keys. Because the palm rest portion is thin plastic, this part warms slightly over the weight of the hand. Nothing to fear, It won’t break very easily. Rather, it seems to me very strong.

The good thing is that the Asus VivoBook S15 (S530) has a dedicated number pad on the keyboard. As always, the function keys have quick toggle options for different settings. And there is a backlit for writing in the dark. Its trackpad is much smaller than the laptop’s chassis. However, all the gestures of Windows on the trackpad worked well.

Displays, Audio and Sensors

The Asus VivoBook S15 (S530) laptop uses a 15.6-inch display with full HD 1920p resolution. The display is a matte display of IPS technology. The display’s contrast and viewing angle were good. However, the color was not very acute. However, many companies still offer HD 768p displays in this budget. But Asus has done a very good job. However, in the light of my personal experience, I would say that you will enjoy the movie and media content very well on this display.

Like other premium laptops of Asus, the Asus VivoBook S15 (S530) notebook was not used by any famous audio company’s audio driver. However, they have used their own software-based Sonicmaster technology. Through this you will get enhanced audio experience for different types of content, using their specially tuned presets. Even though the speaker grill is at the bottom, the sound is quite loud.

The laptop uses the 720p HD resolution webcam. That’s enough for a short video call. And yes, there is a fingerprint reader right next to the trackpad. This allows you using Windows Hello to login to Windows and various services without password.

Let’s see how this laptop works. With this specification you will be good enough for everyday tasks, business works and gaming. Also, if you want better performance you can take any variant with Core i7 or SSD. With dedicated graphics, you get a little higher frame rate in the latest games. That doesn’t mean you can play all kinds of games in it. For those casual gamers, the Intel ® UHD Graphics 630 will go fairly with the graphics card. Because you can play almost all games by lowering the resolution in low settings.

It’s powerful enough for everyday web browsing or Microsoft Office works or playing 4K movies. If you want, you can also raise a bit more money with the more powerful MX 150 GPU. The good side of it is that you can extend its RAM up to 16GB. Asus Vivobook S15 (S530) laptops have hybrid storage facilities, you will get a M.2 SSD slot. So if you do not buy variants with SSD, you can install SSD without changing the primary storage if you want.

Ports and Connectivity

Asus Vivobook S15 (S530) Laptop has four full size USB ports. Two of them are USB 2.0 and the other two of them are USB 3.0. But at this point, it was not good for me to give USB 2.0. Of course, 2.0 is better than not having a port! But the good part is that the Asus VivoBook S15 (S530) notebook also has USB 3.0 Generation 2 supported Type C port which can transfer data faster.

It also has a full size HDMI port and a 3.5mm standard port for audio output. There is also a built-in microSD card reader. In my opinion, giving a larger sized SD card reader rather than a microSD card reader would be more convenient for photographers. It has high speed AC WiFi chip and Bluetooth 4.2 for wireless connectivity. However, I did not understand the reason for not providing an Ethernet port on a 15.6 inch laptop.

Battery Backup

The Asus VivoBook S15 (S530) laptop uses a lithium prismatic battery of 42 watts of power from three cells. For a 15.6 inch screen laptop, its battery capacity is a little diminished. But by using a little calculation to reduce the brightness, you can easily cross office or class hours without chargers. Our experience says that with its battery you can watch full HD movie in about 7-8 hours. Besides, browsing or using Microsoft Office, you can get backups like 4-5 hours very easily. Asus is providing a 65-watt charger with the laptop, which allows it to charge its battery very quickly.

In most cases, students or employees may buy laptops for under 700 budget. Other companies in this budget are also offering laptops of almost the same specification. But from the review of Asus VivoBook S15 (S530) is unique and classic design, fingerprint scanner or nano edge display will undoubtedly put it ahead of many. It may not give you super-performance, but it may not be fair to expect more from a laptop in this budget. So if a few things can be compromised, there are no better options in this budget.
